Upcoming events -

  1. Spike night MONDAY, August 25.  Runabout Sports after practice for purchasing discounted shoes, sunglasses, sports gel, etc.
  2. Forms - I have physicals from almost everyone at this point, but we've got a long ways to go for the remaining required forms.  I need these by the end of next week at the latest.

    1. Rules booklet - last page completed and returned.  I have lots of copies of this if your athlete hasn't brought one home yet

    2. Medical form - I need this for our files to take to meets

    3. Contract - last page from the Plan document.  Sign and return.

  1. Transportation -

    1. Mr. Coleman from the middle school has indicated that Bus 140 will be running as the activity bus once again.  That should start next week (first day of school).  If things change, I'll let you know ASAP.

    2. I will be driving the HVHS Activity Bus to VA XC Showcase with the top 7 runners from the boys and girls teams.  I am allowed to enter up to 10 athletes, so if additional runners wish to attend and can arrange for alternative transportation, you may have an opportunity to participate in this meet as well.  This will be an overnight trip (Friday).

  1. Safety-

    1. We are required by a new VHSL rule to have an AED within 3 minutes of all athletes at all times.  That means I'll be biking with an AED in a backpack when we're on the roads.  There will also be ones placed around campus.  This will require us to be mindful of where the team is running so we don't get too spread out

    2. I am asking all runners to keep phones with them when running off campus (or runner with someone with a phone) so that I can be reached in an emergency.  My phone number is 717-413-0450.

  2. Funds -

    1. Once again, we will not be requiring tee dues and will not have any separate fundraisers

    2. We will be generating revenue from hosting Clash with the Titans on 9/13 and SWVA MS Champs on 10/8.  Parents and athletes are asked to help with Clash.  Athletes will help with MS Champs.

    3. We have $4000 provided by the school for our running program (CC + indoor/outdoor track).  That will be spent on new uniforms since many of our old ones "disappeared" during the track season.

    4. Any lost uniforms this year will incur an $80 replacement cost.

    5. We will again be purchasing yellow athletic t-shirts for the team.  I'm working on that order now.  We will not have a "team store" for additional gear given the time it takes for that to come in (months).

  3. Schedule -

    1. I'll plan to circulate the week's workouts on Sunday and have them posted on the team room door

    2. Practice will start at 3:45 PM once school starts and ends at 5:45 PM. 

    3. Weekends when we do not have meets, anticipate having practice at 8 AM on Saturdays, usually on the Greenway

    4. We practice rain or shine, as long as it's not lightning.  Even then, we'll probably do alternative activities inside.

    5. I'm attaching the meet schedule with an asterisk * next to meets where the MS runners will compete

    6. I would like all high school runners to plan to compete through Regionals with the top 7 boys and girls then moving on to the State meet  We're going to have a great season!

Important date for the season:

  1. First day of school - Thursday, August 14.  Same meeting spot.  Middle school should be able to take the activity bus, but I'll have to confirm when that starts running and what time it will arrive.  Parents might need to transport athletes until the bus is going.
  2. Spike Night! - Monday, August 25.  Your chance to get discounts (spikes, trainers, gear, etc) from RunAbout Sports!    We'll head over after practice (5:30 - 6:30).  This is a great opportunity to get gear at a reduced price while supporting a business that supports us (they sponsor Clash and provide bibs for our meets).
  3. Clash with the Titans - Saturday, September 13.  Once again, we'll be looking for help from athletes and parents to support this major fundraiser for our program.  Last year was a huge success with over 800 registered athletes, and I expect an equally large and enthusiastic crowd this year.
  4. Middle School Championships - Wednesday, October 8.  Our 2nd major meet with over 400 middle school runners.

Reminder: To participate in any athletic practice or event, you must have an updated VHSL Sports Physical completed and on file at the school.
